DESIGN GIANNONE PETRICONE ASSOCIATES
PHOTOGRAPHY STEVE TSAI
BUILT BY EVENTSCAPE, JUNE 2017
[expand title=”Eventscape was contracted to engineer, fabricate and install a 54-foot-long by 4-1/2-foot-high custom art wall to adorn a new pedestrian mews area in the Shops at Don Mills shopping centre. Built of digitally fabricated aluminum composite panels with an accordion fold and mounted on a steel sub-frame, it featured a full-bleed direct print. The accordion fold allowed for two different views – a historical aerial photo of the Don Mills area when viewed from one side and from the other side graphic text describing the history of the site.” trigclass=”arrowright”]
Since printing the graphic could only be done on a flat sheet, the panels were printed first, followed by folding and assembly using the client approved graphic. The four foot by eight-foot material size of the aluminum panels dictated that only three full panels of the 60-panel total were printed on each sheet. Eventscape then cut out each of the rectangular panels with the 3-axis CNC machine and a V-groove was cut on the back of each finished panel to create the 90-degree fold.
Each panel had a steel bracket on the back for attachment to the steel sub-frame and could also be removed for maintenance with a pivot mechanism. An overlapping butt joint in the valley fold at individual panel seams resulted in a discreet joint condition with a thin shadow line. With an anti-graffiti coating and a final aluminum capped border, this art wall created a unique visual history lesson both on entering and leaving the open-air shopping centre.[/expand]
