BUILT BY EVENTSCAPE, AUGUST 2014

The canopy at Staten Island Esplanade was part of the upgrade and major redevelopment of the St George Ferry Terminal which is the terminal from Staten Island to Manhattan. The canopy lights no longer worked after 18 years and the lighting technology used was now obsolete. FTL was asked to revisit their design with a new lighting approach where the fixtures could be traded out from esplanade and not from above. Working with Leni Schwendinger Lighting Design, FTL’s design incorporated Schwendinger’s induction lamp used for bridge lighting. Eventscape was responsible for the translucent new fabric skins which allowed the fixture to properly glow. Reinforcement of the fabric at the light source was designed in an overlapping petal fashion to mimic the steel tubing of the support structures.
