Overview Judges Finalist & People’s Choice

COMPETITION OVERVIEW

A design competition putting the spotlight on parametric design and advanced manufacturing processes to give new life and purpose to a pile of unwanted wood. The 1,450 feet overstock of pre-cut lengths of resilient black locust wood from a cancelled project could have been destined for the dump. Instead, Eventscape chose to take action on the environment impact of this and offer not only the building material but also its consulting support in digital and robotic fabrication workflows to realize the winning scheme. RFPs were sent to leading academic and research institutions and three shortlisted submissions will be judged by a jury of industry professionals as well as recognize a People’s Choice winner.

John D. Cerone

Principal, SHoP Architects

John is a principal at SHoP Architects, where he directs dedicated initiatives for model-based delivery and offsite manufacturing. He is internationally recognized as an innovator in the exploration of future technologies for design and construction, and his work in Design for Manufacturing & Assembly processes, and CAD/CAM integration, has defined the success of many SHoP projects, including the Barclays Center, Nassau Coliseum, and the Botswana Innovation Hub. John was instrumental in the creation and launch of Assembly OSM, applying automotive and aerospace manufacturing processes to transform capabilities in the practice of architecture, engineering and construction, and he leads both SHoP and Assembly OSM, in collaboration with Dassault Systèmes, as part of a transdisciplinary group that includes key companies from the automotive, aerospace and marine industries. John received a Master of Architecture from Columbia University and a Bachelor of Architecture from Miami University.

Sebastian Errazuriz

Artist and Designer in New York

Sebastian Errazuriz is a chilean artist and designer based in New York. Celebrated by international critics, his work has been exhibited in more than 100 exhibitions and incorporated into private and museum collections around the world.
His work has been acclaimed by major media including the NY Times, The Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Bloomberg, BBC, CNN, Vogue, Elle Decor, and Architectural Digest. Videos of his works have been viewed by millions of people and HE has been portrayed on more than 50 magazine covers.
Blurring the boundaries between art, design, and technology, Errazuriz's work always surprises and invites the viewer to once again look at realities and objects hidden with the naked eye. His obsession with perfection translates into works whose methodology and conceptual complexity is also translated into execution and manufacturing of the highest level.
Errazuriz regularly develops design collections for international galleries such as David Gill in London and R&Co in New York.
His public art installations have been exhibited in Times Square and the New Museum. He has been invited to create collaborations with luxury brands such as Audemars Piguet watches and the Genesis automotive brand.

Lara Kaufman

Design Director, Studio Gang

Architect Lara Kaufman is a Design Director based in the Studio’s New York office. As Studio Gang's Sustainability & Climate Action Lead, she oversees the Studio's Sustainability Task Force and advises project teams across all offices on decarbonization strategies and design approaches for water conservation, site ecologies, and healthy materials. She is currently an advisor for the David Rubenstein Treehouse at Harvard University, which is targeting Living Building Challenge’s Core Green Building Certification and Materials Petal.
A committed advocate for urgent climate action within the building industry, she is a member of the Carbon Leadership Forum (CLF) and the American Institute of Architects New York (AIANY) Committee on the Environment (COTE) embodied carbon working group. She also contributes to the Studio’s ongoing research into sustainability, including a whole life carbon analysis of our Beloit College Powerhouse project that was presented at the 2022 AIA National Conference, and has served as guest lecturer for numerous university studio courses.
Lara additionally brings over 20 years of experience stewarding complex cultural and institutional projects from conceptualization to completion. Prior to Studio Gang, she led the expansion project for the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) from kickoff to completion while at Snøhetta.
She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Russian Studies from Columbia University and a Master of Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley. Outside of the office, you can find Lara volunteering with the NYC Compost Project and other climate action groups.

Joseph Burns

Managing Principal, Thorton Tomassetti

Mr. Burns joined Thornton Tomasetti in 1995 and has more than 40 years of experience designing structures as well as investigating and renovating existing buildings. Joe is a passionate advocate for the deeper integration of architecture and engineering, which he promotes through technical innovation in the design of structural systems, collaboration in practice and leadership in building science education. His credits span a wide spectrum of building types and include commercial, residential, healthcare, education, cultural, aviation and sports. He has served as a member of Thornton Tomasetti’s board of directors, with his practice based in the Chicago office.
He shares his expertise through teaching, publishing and lectures, including presentations at the Chicago Architecture Foundation, the AIA National Convention. Mr. Burns has taught at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Illinois Institute of Technology, University of Maryland, University of Washington, and Northwestern University, among others. He holds a bachelor degree in architecture from the University of Notre Dame and master degrees in architecture and civil engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Jenny Sabin

Director of Design Tech, Cornell

Jenny E. Sabin is an architectural designer whose work is at the forefront of a new direction for 21st century architectural practice — one that investigates the intersections of architecture and science and applies insights and theories from biology and mathematics to the design of responsive material structures and ecological spatial interventions for diverse audiences. Sabin is the Arthur L. and Isabel B. Wiesenberger Professor in Architecture and the inaugural Chair for the new multicollege Department of Design Tech at the Cornell College of Architecture, Art, and Planning where she established a new advanced research degree in Matter Design Computation. She is principal of Jenny Sabin Studio, an experimental architectural design studio based in Ithaca and Director of the Sabin Design Lab at Cornell AAP. Her book, LabStudio: Design Research Between Architecture and Biology, co-authored with Peter Lloyd Jones was published in July 2017. In that same year, Sabin won MoMA & MoMA PS1’s Young Architects Program with her submission, Lumen.
